This Competition Scheme for a Junior Primary School intertwines themes of place, purpose and play, cultivating a rich ecology of learning experiences.
The design draws inspiration from the site’s natural history—once defined by pockets of inland sand dunes and plains of red bluff sandstone. The roof form echoes the shifting movement of dunes, creating a silhouette that evokes motion and change.
The building’s structure and façades are brought to life through finely detailed clay brickwork. An expressed mass timber frame veiled in a terracotta screen references the delicate form of she-oak flowers. The built form is articulated into smaller elements that align with the scale and character of the broader campus and reinforce a sense of belonging.
Internally, the school nurtures a welcoming community and embraces progressive approaches to teaching and learning. The formal classrooms interface with informal learning landscapes designed for flexibility and future adaptation. A clear interior hierarchy organises the plan into legible, identifiable spaces, supporting movement between focused learning environments and zones that invite reconfiguration and curation over time. The relationship to the outdoor environment is celebrated through strong visual links across the school campus, with opportunities for learning within the landscape and naturally ventilated wintergarden spaces.
