This Competition Scheme for the expansion of a suburban Arts Centre celebrates the vital role community facilities play in showcasing the work of accomplished artists while also providing environments for new talents to emerge and develop. The design prioritises the creation of new facilities (art gallery, theatre, artist residence, artist workshops, conference spaces and office spaces) to support a vibrant multidisciplinary artistic program, ensuring improved access to events and activities for a growing community. The scheme creates a focal point for a thriving cultural precinct, with active public spaces responding to existing gardens and café.
A new western entry combined with a walkway promenade activates the eastern boundary, with arts programs to the south creating a new built form entry and foyer space. A new public realm is imagined as “the place to be”, while a centralised circular pavilion, serving as an events space for community and arts experiences, will inspire visitors and create ripples of activity.
