JCB has completed a feasibility study for the re-imaging of a selection of RMIT’s existing lecture theatres. With the university’s accelerated transition to online lectures as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the current demand for lecture theatres has reduced significantly. This demand will not increase as RMIT’s strategic direction continues to prioritise digital lecture content delivery.

This underutilisation of space presents an opportunity to re-think the future use and redevelopment of RMIT’s portfolio of lecture theatres. To re-envision these spaces to embody the aspirations set out in the university’s Knowledge With Action strategy; so they better support the changing pedagogical and spatial needs of the RMIT community; and so they can positively serve the interests of the broader public.

JCB’s feasibility captures a fine-grain, multi-campus site analysis that has informed a number of recommendations for how RMIT might approach the redevelopment of their lecture theatres.
