Murrup Barak takes its name from the Woi-wurrung language, ‘Murrup Barak’ meaning the Spirit of Barak. The name was chosen to honour the memory of the visionary Aboriginal leader William Barak. Murrup Barak connects students with the support they need to make decisions, navigate their way through the University and be prepared for what comes after graduation.
The project relocated Murrup Barak to Level 6 of Building 168 at the University of Melbourne’s Parkville Campus. The existing interior fit-out was demolished and redesigned to support the cultural and functional needs of Murrup Barak, now and into the future. The redevelopment was undertaken in alignment with Murrup Barak’s values and aspirations: to support current and future students, advocacy and strategic advice and planning within the University, while also supporting the functional and cultural needs of the Murrup Barak team. The design incorporates artwork by multi-disciplinary artist Tommy Day (Guditjmara, Wemba Wemba, and Yorta Yorta) that flows through the space, suspended from the ceiling.
