Altona Pier has been recognised at this year’s VIC Landscape Architecture Awards, winning the highest honour in the Civic Landscape category, the Award of Excellence.
Citation: “The new Altona Pier is a cleverly conceived, beautifully detailed and an exemplary example of site-responsive civic design. While the use of a full timber deck references the much-loved historic jetty it replaces, the design remains contemporary with raked columns, curved stanchions, open steel railings (with integrated lighting) and seating constructed from timber recycled from the original pier. This is an elegant, functional and well-built structure that should be a feature of the Altona foreshore and civic precinct for the next 100 years.”
Designed in collaboration with Site Office and AW Maritime, Altona Pier has become a much-loved local landmark that achieves civic generosity and improved accessibility for its community. The elegantly curved pier offers 260m of widened length, supporting increased visitor numbers, ambulance access, and room for people with bikes and prams to enjoy the sunset over the water.
Congratulations to our team and our heartfelt thanks to the jury and the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects for awarding Altona Pier with this special accolade.
