Giant Steps Melbourne is an education centre for children with autism in Kew. The expansion of the existing campus supports a growing community of young people across the autism spectrum through education and care services.
The new facilities include a variety of learning spaces, a library, staff amenities, community facilities and a playground. Colour and material choices were key in the creation of calm spaces to provide nurturing environments for the students. A gentle palette of soft shades flows through the flexible learning areas, while flourishes of yellow invite a sense of joy and playfulness and connect the school to its Sydney campus.
High-quality staff offices and breakout spaces provide teaching staff with respite from face-to-face learning environments. The design emphasises hard-working, pragmatic material choices and day-to-day function. Constructed on a site formerly occupied by a school, the use of bricks weds the new elements to existing buildings and the broader residential context.
