At St Kilda Pier, JCB, Site Office and AW Maritime have designed a new penguin boardwalk that echoes the arc of the outer breakwater and protected harbour, distancing humans from the penguin habitat whilst maintaining close viewing proximity.
The breakwater is home to a colony of approximately 1,400 Little Penguins. During the day the penguins feed out in the bay, but at sunset they return to the breakwater rocks to nest. The new boardwalk ensures the protection of the penguin colony while providing a safe and sustainable way for visitors to enjoy and learn about them.
You can see Melbourne’s iconic Little Penguins from the new viewing platform at the end of St Kilda Pier during nightly guided (free and ticketed) sessions.
