This week for International Women’s Day we welcomed two guests to the studio for a discussion titled "Expectation, Entitlement and Empathy: The human side of business". Our guests were Emily Kilvington, Director of Architecture + Design at NH and Sarah Buckeridge, Managing Principal at Hayball. Together with Sarah Lynn Rees, Emily and Sarah explored the way their respective practices accommodate requests for flexible work and navigate generational expectations while still meeting client demands on projects of different scales and types. It was refreshing to hear from two accomplished women working in studios whose work we respect and admire, exploring the challenges all architectural practices face in being both good employers and well-run businesses. As Emily commented, these day-to-day decisions about running a practice are hard, and they should be. What really came through was both Sarah and Emily’s commitment to being fair and listening to the needs of employees, while also balancing the demands of their own professional and personal lives. It was a terrific and very worthwhile discussion.
