The Church St Showroom is a multi-level retail development on a deep and narrow site in inner-city Richmond.
Given the site constraints, JCB identified two key opportunities during architectural idea exploration: the expression of the building facade and the manipulation of its internal volume.
Accordingly, the building’s section was organised around a central stair void to create a dynamic internal volume where visual connection between the various retail floor plates could be maximised. This was achieved by offsetting the eastern and western floor plates at half levels off the central stair void.
This ensured that customers could engage with the product display on every level, both physically and visually, as they circulate within the space.
