The Australian Print Workshop (APW) is a highly successful arts organisation in fine art printmaking, education, public gallery programs and community access and outreach projects, located in the cultural heart of Fitzroy.

JCB provided full consultancy services for alterations and additions to the existing two-storey premises to improve the workings and viability of the APW.

New works include a building extension for ‘artist in residence’ accommodation, replanning and refurbishment of the interior to improve education programs and provide larger open plan print studios to enable the production of larger scale works. An upgrade of the APW print-works gallery and building facade further enhances its public profile and patronage.

New facade interventions contributed to the project’s success, including large steel windows and a dynamic cantilevered canopy. These activate the street frontage and increase visibility while providing solar protection to exhibited works on paper and reveal the internal activities of the APW.

The program was carefully executed in two stages so that the APW could remain in operation during construction works.
